County Freeholders Promote 'Diversity, Progress'

Cumberland County's 250th Anniversary Celebration Commission has done a superb job in spreading the message that our corner of New Jersey owes much of its success to "250 Years of Diversity and Progress."

This theme has been exemplified time and time again by the special events sponsored by the Commission. These activities have showcased the contributions and talents of the multi-cultural groups which have molded us into the community we share today.

Our county is filled from east to west with citizens who take great pride in the heritage of the past and build upon that spirit for the promise of the future. Residents of all our 14 municipalities have taken advantage to celebrate how far we have come from that January day in 1748 when we separated from Salem County and were officially recognized by the Colonial Legislature.

Cumberland's solid agricultural base has been built upon by generations of residents who have endeavored and excelled in all facets of economic growth. The skills of Cumberland's native inhabitants and those who chose to live here after leaving their homelands have brought us recognition in the manufacturing, distribution, and service industries.

It is most fitting that our 250th anniversary celebration comes at a time of vigorous economic growth and prosperity in Cumberland County. Those who came before us worked hard to ensure our success. We continue to work hard so our children can share the benefits we can pass on to them.

The series of special events planned by the 250th Commission culminates this Fourth of July (1998) with a celebration along the Bridgeton Waterfront from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. We invite you to join in these festivities and share the pride we all have in the achievements of Cumberland County over the past 250 years.
