3/6/2026 - Women's History Month

In November 1868, more than fifty years before women secured the right to vote nationally, 172 women in Vineland took a bold and historic stand. Gathering inside Plum Street Hall, they symbolically cast ballots in the presidential election to demand recognition of their voices and their rights.

Led by Portia Gage, the women used a simple blueberry crate as their ballot box. Among them were at least four African American women, demonstrating an early and inclusive commitment to civic participation during a time of significant national change.

This peaceful but powerful act placed Vineland at the forefront of the women’s suffrage movement. Their courage remains a lasting reminder that progress often begins at the local level — with individuals willing to step forward and be heard.

Today, that very Women’s Ballot Box is featured in The Declaration’s Journey, a special exhibition at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, on display from October 18, 2025, through January 3, 2027.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society for its dedicated research and preservation efforts, ensuring this powerful piece of history continues to educate and inspire future generations.
