Starting Salary - $37,000


Duties: Under close supervision and direction of a Weights and Measures supervisory officer, within a three-year training program, perform productive work while receiving formal and on-the-job training in the inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices; does other related duties as required.

Examples of Work: 

? Perform activities to inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices using scales, leverage devices, volumetric instruments, and other standard and metric methods to determine accuracy of equipment tested and sealing approved equipment.

? Inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices used to pack commodities, weigh vehicles, dispense gasoline, fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas, and other petroleum products.

? Assist in the operation of heavy-duty scale testing units and auxiliary equipment, volumetric meter provers, pharmaceutical and other specialized testing equipment.

? Investigate routine complaints and recommend proper remedial action to the immediate supervisor.

? File issues, solid fuel licenses, records, and other files.

? Prepare reports of tests, inspections, calibrations, and investigations containing observations, findings, conclusions, recommendations, and actions taken.

? Collect evidence and develop a case management file against violators of weights and measures statutes/regulations.

? Work in concert with other law enforcement agencies in the arrest and prosecution of law violators.

Requirements      Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey. Appointees may also be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class of vehicle being operated.

Position requires heavy lifting. Appointees must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. 

Appointees will be required to successfully complete the Weights & Measures training program conducted by the State Office of Weights &  Measures, Department of Law & Public Safety, during the apprenticeship program. 
Appointee's work performance will be reviewed and rated semi-annually during each twelve (12) months of the three (3) year apprenticeship program. Upon successful completion of the thirty-six (36) month apprenticeship program, appointees in this position will be eligible for advancement to the title of Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures, in accordance with New Jersey Civil Service Commission procedures. The inability of an employee in the Apprentice title to satisfactorily complete the training period and/or attain a level of performance warranting advancement to Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures shall be considered cause for separation from employment.
