Overview: The Cumberland County Clerk’s Office plays a vital role in serving the public by administering oaths of office, certifying notaries, recording deeds and mortgages, filing military discharges, issuing veteran identification cards, performing wedding ceremonies, supporting elections, and acting as a passport acceptance agency on behalf of the U.S. Department of State.
We are currently seeking a Clerk with strong attention to detail and excellent customer service skills. The primary responsibility of this position will be the processing of passport applications in compliance with federal regulations.
Primary Duties:
• Serve as a Passport Acceptance Agent by reviewing and processing passport applications in accordance with U.S. Department of State guidelines.
• Verify applicant identities, ensure completeness of application materials, collect required fees, and manage submission procedures.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with applicants to explain requirements and procedures.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive documentation securely.
• Assist with general clerical tasks, including the recording of land records (deeds, mortgages, etc.).
• Perform cashiering duties, including accepting and processing payments.
• Support the office during election periods, which may involve overtime hours.
Requirements:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills must be comfortable working with the public.
• Familiarity with office technology, including Microsoft Office 365 and email.
• Ability to pass the U.S. Department of State Passport Acceptance Agent Exam and Test (required).
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
• Must be able to type at least 40 net words per minute (typing test required).
• Ability to work independently and handle confidential materials responsibly.
Schedule & Work Location:
• 27 hours per week, Wednesday through Tuesday., including weekends.
• Initial 3-month training period at the County Courthouse in Bridgeton, followed by regular placement at the County Store in the Cumberland Mall.
• Must be available to work extended hours during elections.
• Must be willing to work at two different office locations with differing schedules.
Note: Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness testing, including drug screens.
