Starting Salary: $37,000 – 40,667

Duties: Under close supervision and direction of a Weights and Measures supervisory officer, in a three-year training program, performs productive work while receiving formal and on-the-job training in the inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices; does other related duties.

• Learns to perform activities to inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices using scales, leverage devices, volumetric instruments, and other standard and metric methods to determine accuracy of equipment tested and sealing approved equipment.
• Learns to inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices used to pack commodities, weigh vehicles, dispense gasoline, fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas, and other petroleum products.
• Assists in the operation of heavy-duty scale testing units and auxiliary equipment, volumetric meter provers, pharmaceutical and other specialized testing equipment.
• Learns to investigate routine complaints and recommend proper remedial action to the immediate supervisor.

Requirements:
License: Appointees must possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey.  Appointees may also be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Note: Appointees will be required to successfully complete the Weights & Measures training program conducted by the State Office of Weights & Measures, Department of Law & Public Safety, during the apprenticeship program.

Advancement:
• Appointee's work performance will be reviewed and rated semi-annually during each twelve (12) months of the three (3) year apprenticeship program. Upon successful completion of the thirty-six (36) month apprenticeship program, appointees in this position will be eligible for advancement to the title of Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures, in accordance with Department of Personnel procedures.
• The inability of an appointee in the Apprentice title to attain the required level of performance stipulated in each of the twelve (12) month training periods shall be considered cause for separation from employment.

Hours: 40 hours per week. Monday through Friday

Note: Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness examination including drug screens.
