Cumberland County Health Department is reporting its seventh positive rabies case for 2010.

A raccoon found in Bridgeton on Monday, September 6th, has tested positive for rabies, according to county health officer Virginia Preesada. The raccoon was found dead near the East Lake area. Before the time of death, the raccoon appeared sick as it staggered along the lake area during the daytime. It is unknown whether the raccoon has been exposed to or harmed any humans or animals.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can affect humans and animals.

"Residents are encouraged to keep your family and pets safe from rabies," Preesada said. "Avoid wild and stray animals that act strangely; even if the animal is overly friendly. Protect your pets by making sure their rabies vaccinations are up to date."

Remember to report any suspicious activity by raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes, cattle, horses, cats or dogs to your local animal control officer.
