2/22/2011 - Former Sheriff Daniel LaFerriere Dies

Daniel F. LaFerriere, 81, of Millville died suddenly Sunday, February 20, 2011, at his home after a brief illness.

Born in Millville, he graduated from Millville High School. He was a former Cumberland County sheriff and served from 1985 through 1987. He had retired as a state police lieutenant in 1982, with 28 1/2 years of service. He was a current member of the Retired New Jersey State Police Association. During his retirement, he worked as the director of safety and security at Durand Glass of Vineland from 1982 to 1985.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a sergeant and was a member of the Marine Corps League of Vineland and Nabb Leslie Post No. 82 American Legion of Millville. He attended the Methodist church. He enjoyed duck hunting, fishing and target shooting.

His many memberships included the F&A Masons Shekinah Lodge No. 58, the Millville Elks BPOE No. 580, North Italy Club of Vineland, Cumberland Riflemen, Laurel Lake Property Owners Association, the Diamond Social Club of Vineland and the Cumberland County Republican Club. He was a former member of Vineland Moose Lodge, Millville Old Timers' Club and Millville Rotary Club.

He is survived by his son, James A. LaFerriere and his companion Regina Merkel of Millville; two grandchildren, Travis LaFerriere and wife Casey of Bridgeton, and Katie Drake and husband Kyle of Vineland; and several nieces.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Margaret (Harvey), in 2003; his brother, Harry LaFerriere; and sister, Hannah Bakely.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 26th at Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville. There will be a viewing at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, before the service. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Park in Millville.
