3/16/2011 - Sherman Ave. & Boulevard Construction Detour

Nine-Month Construction Detour
on Sherman Avenue

A nine-month construction project along a section of Sherman Avenue (CR 552) in Vineland began on Monday, March 14th. Message boards are in place informing drivers about the detour.

The $3.1 million federally funded project will bring major improvements to the section of Sherman Avenue (CR 552) on both sides of the intersection with SE and SW Boulevards and the Conrail railroad tracks that run between them. Most notably, the construction will bring Sherman Avenue up to the grade of the tracks. The project also includes adding two additional lanes to Sherman Avenue at the intersection as well as a traffic signal. Conrail will be improving and widening the railroad-crossing surface.

This will be a substantial safety improvement,” said Freeholder Sam Fiocchi, Chairman of the Department of Public Works. “With the road at the same level as the railroad tracks and a traffic signal, drivers will have greater peace of mind moving through the intersection.”

The first phase of construction will close Sherman Avenue from Delsea Drive to SW Boulevard. The second phase will close Sherman Avenue from Main Road to SE Boulevard. Drivers will not be able to cross the tracks during the entire construction period, but access will be open to local residents and businesses along the construction area.

A nine-month construction project along a section of Sherman Avenue (CR 552) in Vineland is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 14th. The detour around the construction area during Phase I will be:

  • Delsea Drive (Rt. 47) south to Butler Avenue east

  • Butler Avenue east to SE Boulevard

  • SE Boulevard north to Sherman Avenue (CR 552) east

The Sherman Avenue project has been in the planning stages since 2004. Freeholder Fiocchi said, “I am especially pleased that the contract for the construction was awarded to a Cumberland County company.”

The work will be done by South State, Inc. of Bridgeton.
