Longtime Cumberland County surrogate and local businessman Harry A. Freitag Jr. has died.

Mr. Freitag served as Cumberland County surrogate from 1984 until his retirement in 2003. He held the office of president of the State Surrogate Section of the County Officers Association and served on numerous other committees with the Administrative Office of the Courts.

His political career spanned nearly six decades. He was elected to Bridgeton City Council in 1952 and served for three terms as Cumberland County coroner from 1956 until 1964. In 1966 he was elected to the Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders. He served a total of 15 years, including three terms as director, before being elected to the post of Cumberland County surrogate.

Friends will be received at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St. in Bridgeton on Friday evening, March 18, from 5 until 8 p.m. and also on Saturday, March 19, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.
