Disaster Relief Available To April Storm Victims

Cumberland County Officials want residents who suffered losses in the April 16th storm to know about special low interest loans made available by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Including damage to roads and public property, the storm and subsequent flooding caused more than $3 million worth of damage, mostly along the Delaware Bay in Downe, Commercial and Maurice River Townships. The disaster loans are available to homeowners and renters as well as businesses and non-profit organizations.

Disaster Relief Available To April Storm VictimsCounty and local officials toured the affected areas earlier this month with state emergency management and SBA officials.

They were looking for houses and businesses that suffered structural damages,” said Jim Manski, Cumberland County’s Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator. “Much of the damage we saw resulted from flooding.”

Qualified homeowners and renters could have access to loans with interest rates as low as 2.563 percent. The interest could be as low as 3 percent for non-profits and 4 percent for businesses. Repayment terms can be up to 30 years.

This is encouraging news for residents and businesses that need help with losses from the storm,” said Freeholder Director William F. Whelan. “This will help bring some needed relief.”

James Matlock, Director of Public Safety for Cumberland County says qualifying for the federal disaster loans is the result of weeks of work by county and local officials who have been surveying damage, compiling costs and applying to government agencies. “I have to commend our county’s Office of Emergency Management,” said Matlock. “Their diligent work is what led to us being recognized by the federal government.”

There are a number of ways residents and businesses can begin the process of applying for the loans. To apply in person, a Disaster Loan Outreach Center is opened (through July 2nd) at:
