Library Needs help with Family “Block Party”
The Bridgeton Library is introducing a new monthly program for children ages 5 and up, and their families. Each month, the library will invite participants to listen to stories based on a theme, and then build their own Lego creations to go along with that theme.
This program has been instituted in several libraries across the country and has been very successful. Studies have shown that play, such as building with Legos, helps children to lay the foundations for logical mathematical thinking, scientific reasoning and problem solving. In addition, “promoting play contributes to early literacy development by increasing attention span, memory, creativity, and language and vocabulary skills” (School Library Journal, 2009).
While many of the blocks will be provided through a Community Development Block Grant, donations of Legos in good condition would be greatly appreciated. Anyone interested in donating blocks can call 451-2620 for more information, or simply bring the blocks in anytime the library is open.
The Bridgeton Library is located at 150 E. Commerce Street, in Bridgeton. The library is open Mondays, 10-5; Tuesday through Thursday, 10-8; Friday 10-5; and Saturday 10-4.
