4/3/2012 - Library Receives Donation of Fine Art Books

Cumberland County Library has received a donation of 23 free new fine arts books and DVDs donated through the Distribution to Underserved Communities Library Program (DUC). The DUC is a program of Art Resources Transfer, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in 1987. The DUC distributes books on contemporary art and culture free of charge to rural and inner –city libraries, schools and alternative reading centers nationwide. The program aims to actively further a more egalitarian access to contemporary art.

The books donated provide information about and images of the work of Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, Isamu Noguchi, and many other contemporary artists.  The books include “The Katrina Paintings”, with haunting work by the artist David Bates depicting the Hurricane Katrina disaster;  “Warhol antePop”, depicting Andy Warhol’s early art; and “Paris 1900: The ‘American School’ at the Universal Exhibition”, illuminating American artistic aspirations at the start of the 20th century. The DVDs include “Painters Painting”, a history of the New York Art Scene from 1940 to 1970; and “Alice Neel”, a filmed biography of one of the great portrait painters of the 20th century.
