Cumberland County Curfew Ordinances
Impact of Curfew Ordinances on Safety
Summer is in full swing, and that means our community’s youth are out and about enjoying the warmer weather. The warmer weather means more interaction between families, friends, neighbors - even strangers. As people spend more time out during the evenings, summer can also create a recipe for crime and victimization. Research has shown that violent crime and victimization increases at night. Your child becomes more vulnerable when the sun goes down.
The constitutionality of juvenile curfew ordinances has been challenged in several places across the state. Many municipalities are reviewing and revising their municipal curfew ordinances to address those challenges. Notwithstanding, the Cumberland County Positive Youth Development Coalition (CCPYDC) would like to remind you that municipal curfew ordinances remain in place and are good rule of thumb to follow to keep your child safe.
If parent's strive to make sure their children are supervised during the late evening hours, it reduces the opportunity for juvenile delinquency and has been shown to reduce the likelihood of youth becoming a victim by as much as 17.7%1.
