5/5/2017 - Cumberland Freeholder Director Joe Derella Named South Jerseyan of the Year

May 5, 2017

The Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs at Rutgers University Camden, has named Cumberland County Freeholder Director Joe Derella as the Public Sector South Jerseyan of the Year. Derella received the award during a special recognition dinner on Thursday, May 4, 2017. Derella was introduced by one of his mentors Dr. Edward Salmon, of Salmon Ventures Ltd.

Director Derella was selected for the award as a result of his passion for taking a proactive approach to ensuring the areas’ youth are on the right track. He has been very involved in the Cumberland County Positive Youth Development Coalition and was instrumental in the program becoming the first Countywide Program in the State of New Jersey. Derella said “Programs like Coffee with a Cop, the Chaplaincy Program and the Station House Adjustments have all made a significant impact on our communities. It is very gratifying to see the positive steps forward that we have made with our youth in the County. I strongly believe that the success of the program is as a result of the outstanding team of volunteers and professionals that we have throughout the County. We have made significant progress with minimal resources. Everyone involved in this effort is to be congratulated. It really is about the team, and we in Cumberland have one of the best. Our Law Enforcement Professionals, Educators, and leaders of the faith base community have all made a commitment to help our youth and provide them with an opportunity to make a difference in our respective communities.”

Director Derella said, “I also want to thank the Walter Rand Institute and Tracy Swan for all of the guidance and work that has gone into getting this program off the ground as well as to keep it moving forward. We have put together an awesome team in Cumberland County and I look forward to seeing this program continue to grow and have a greater impact on our youth as we move forward with new and exciting programs”.
