CUMBERLAND COUNTY ESTABLISHES COOLING CENTERS

The Cumberland County Department of Aging and Disabled has established its 2019 Cooling Center Locations as the area begins to see summer temperatures arrive. Executive Director Barbara A. Nedohon announced that Cooling Centers have been created throughout the county including, The Bridgeton Public Library, Charlotte Brago Center (Rosenhayn), Cumberland County Library (Fairfield/Bridgeton), Cumberland County Office on Aging (Bridgeton), Edgar Joyce Center (Seabrook), Fairfield Senior Center (Fairton), Jean Rugenus Senior Center (Bridgeton), Lawrence Senior Center (Cedarville), Louise Moore Senior Center (Haleyville), Maurice River Senior Center (Leesburg), Millville Center, Millville Library, Millville Sharing Center, Vineland Public Library, Vineland Senior Center, Vineland Sharing Center, West Cumberland Senior Center (Hopewell) and the Downe Senior Center (Newport). “Agencies that open their doors to senior citizens and disabled persons during hot weather are known as Cooling Centers”, explained Nedohon. These facilities will operate as “Cooling Centers” when the temperature reaches 90 degrees or above for two consecutive days, or the heat index reaches 100 degrees or above, as a period of heat alert.

Freeholder Musso stated, “We are very pleased to make such a wide array of facilities available throughout our county to help our seniors, our disabled and those with extreme vulnerability to heat, stay cool during the summer months.” “During heat waves, many health conditions are impacted resulting in a worsening of those conditions”, said Freeholder Musso.

COOLING CENTER CONDITIONS

Agencies that open their doors to senior citizens and disabled persons during hot weather days are known as “Cooling Centers.” We will accept the definition of two days in a row with above 90 degree temperatures, or above 100 degrees heat index, as a period of heat alert.

What the Office on Aging Does:

• Cooling Centers are publicized with a listing maintained by the Office on Aging and participating Cooling Centers for the information for the public.
• Cooling Centers receive identifying posters which convey to seniors that they are welcome.
• New information on resources such as fan distribution programs, fliers, and/or bulletins will be sent as received from the Office on Aging.
• If desired by participating agencies, a meeting to exchange Cooling Center information and activities may be held at season’s end or beginning.

What Cooling Centers Offer:

• As a participating Cooling Center, there should be a place to sit and rest, minimally, with some reading material available.
• Access to organized activities, television, or other programming is a plus.
• Access to refreshments and items such as bottled water is also a plus.
• There should be a contact person so that it is assured that seniors are welcome and made comfortable.
• Cooling Center posters need to be placed in prominent public view during heat emergencies or heat crises.

The concept of Cooling Centers is not complicated, nor does it require too much effort on the part of a participating Center. It does offer senior citizens and disabled persons options, and it opens the door to creative activities and ideas that encourage the participation of the public in your ongoing programs.
