CUMBERLAND COUNTY TO SHARE SERVICES OF WARDEN WITH GLOUCESTER COUNTY
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NEW JERSEY (October 12, 2021) Joseph Derella, Director of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, announced today that Cumberland and Gloucester Counties have entered into a shared services agreement whereby the Warden of the Gloucester County Department of Corrections will assume the role of Interim Warden of the Cumberland County Jail. Director Derella indicated that Gloucester County’s current warden, Eugene J. Caldwell, II would take over as interim warden of the Cumberland County Jail beginning October 13, 2021. The agreement runs through April 30, 2022 and can be extended by the two counties by mutual agreement. Derella stated, “This shared service agreement will bring professional leadership to our corrections department while we evaluate our long term needs.”
Derella described Warden Caldwell as “uniquely qualified” stating, “Warden Caldwell has decades of county corrections experience, but more importantly has been integral to Gloucester’s County’s successful transition from operating a jail to housing detainees in other facilities.” Gloucester County closed its county jail on June 30, 2013 and has since housed its detainees in correctional facilities in other counties. Derella added, “Warden Caldwell’s experience and expertise will be invaluable as Cumberland County implements its plan to house detainees in underutilized correctional facilities in surrounding counties.”
Warden Caldwell began his career in corrections in 1988 as a County Correctional Police Officer achieving the ranks of Sergeant, Shift Lieutenant, Operations Lieutenant, and Deputy Warden before promotion to Gloucester County’s Warden in 2013. Derella added, “Gloucester County has been a pioneer in shared correction services and Warden Caldwell has demonstrated that detainees can be housed in out of county facilities safely and cost effectively.” Derella concluded, “This shared services agreement provides us with proven corrections’ leadership to address our short term needs and guidance as we implement a corrections plan that has worked so successfully for Gloucester County and its residents.”
