An Historic Night in Cumberland County

Bridgeton, New Jersey – Cumberland County – The Cumberland County Board of County Commissioners held a historical swearing in ceremony Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at the Cumberland County Court House. With New Jersey First District State Senator Micheal L. Testa, Jr., administering the oaths of office to newly elected County Commissioners James Sauro, Sandra Taylor and Art Marchand, the Cumberland County Commissioners Board for the first time in history, is now a full Republican controlled Board.
The Commissioner Board proceeded to re-organize and unanimously chose Commissioner Joe Sileo as the 2024 Commission Director and Commissioner Antonio Romero as the 2024 Deputy Commission Director.
Also receiving the oath of office administered by Senator Testa at this meeting was newly elected Cumberland County Surrogate Rudolph “Skip” Luisi.
The Commissioners Chambers of the Courthouse being too small to handle the crowd that attended the meeting which is required by New Jersey State Law to be held at the Cumberland County Court House, a ceremonial swearing in was held later that night at the more spacious Frank Guarancini Performing Arts Center, at Rowan College of South Jersey.
Cumberland County Business Administrator Harold U. Johnson emceed the event. The Presentation of Colors was executed by the Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary. Ellen Durham of Hopewell performed a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem and Reverend Jonathan Merki of the Millville Church of the Nazarene followed with the Invocation.
Thereafter, surrounded by family, friends, and those many people who attended the event, Senator Testa ceremonially administered the oath of office to newly elected Cumberland County Sheriff Micheal Donato, Surrogate Rudolph (Skip) Luisi and Commissioners James Sauro, Sandra Taylor, and Art Marchand. Each new official, Deputy Director Romero and Director Sileo made brief remarks thanking their families and all those who supported them and helped them reach this milestone and pledging to work hard for all the residents of Cumberland County.
The historic evening ended with a positive message by Senator Testa and a Benediction by Pastor Benjamin Ocasio of Rock of Salvation in Vineland.
The Commissioners would like to thank and recognize the assistance of Rowan College of South Jersey, the Color Guard, Ms. Durham, and The Cumberland County Technical Education Center who provided light refreshments for the event.
