Message from the Surrogate


Dear Residents:

It is my great honor to serve the residents of Cumberland County as County Surrogate. This is an important position, which impacts many aspects of the lives of the residents of Cumberland County. My duties as Surrogate include the probate of Wills, appointment of estate administrators, supervising the appointment of guardians and administration of adoptions. I also direct and supervise the Office of the Surrogate and very competent staff.

Perhaps the most important duty of my office is reaching out to the residents of Cumberland County, to make you aware of the importance of making a Will, understanding the probate process and significance of Advance Directives, or Living Wills.

Objectives

The objectives of the Cumberland County Surrogate's Office is to carry out the statutory functions in accordance with Title 3B of the New Jersey Statutes. We will continue the same public service that has become a model in other Surrogate's offices in the state, with cooperation and compassion to clients who require our services at a most difficult time in their lives. We will continue to maintain the professional relationship that we have with the attorneys and all who appear in this office.

Appointments Required

In order to provide the most efficient service to our constituents, we are urging everyone to please contact the Surrogate's Court before coming to the Courthouse. There are certain documents that are necessary to complete the Probate process. By phoning our main number of 856-453-4800 we can detail what is needed to Probate an Estate. We can receive your information by several methods and prepare your documents. By contacting our office prior to coming to the Courthouse you can usually save yourself an unnecessary trip. After receiving all the necessary information we will prepare your Probate documents and set up an appointment for you to sign and receive your Probate papers.
